It was refreshing to see a book where the main characters are allowed to be single and be friends. One of my favourite things about This Savage Song was the lack of a romance plot. I can’t discuss this without spoiling part of the plot, so be aware that there is a spoiler in the following paragraph. There is however one thing that completely threw me out of the story. It was the perfect way to continue the story in my opinion, and even if it meant bad things for some of my favourites, I thought it was a great direction to take the plot. I loved how much darker Our Dark Duet was compared to This Savage Song. This, combined with the new characters, makes for a narrative that is new enough to be compelling, but also familiar enough to not lose the character of the first book. On the one hand we have Kate, who is essentially still the girl we met in This Savage Song, and then there’s August who has changed a lot. The balance between the characters was really great, too. I loved the glimpse at Prosperity we get to see, and I would have loved to see more of Kate’s friends there.
